The recent surprise return of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North apparently isn’t a one-off, as Aspyr has confirmed that more classic games from the franchise are planned for rerelease.
For longtime Lord of the Rings fans, that’s potentially huge news. Before Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War arrived, games such as The Two Towers and The Return of the King defined Tolkien gaming for an entire generation. Now, some of those older titles could finally have a chance to return on modern platforms.
Aspyr Confirms More Classic LOTR Rereleases
The confirmation arrived alongside the release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, which was shadow dropped on August 11.
Originally released in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, War in the North has now been brought back for modern platforms. More importantly, Aspyr’s accompanying announcement contained one particularly interesting statement:
“Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!”
That makes it clear that War in the North is only the beginning.
Aspyr hasn’t revealed which Lord of the Rings games are coming next, so anything beyond that confirmation remains speculation. Still, there are several obvious candidates.
Could The Two Towers and Return of the King Be Next?
Two games that immediately come to mind are The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Released during the early 2000s, both became fan favorites thanks to their fast-paced hack-and-slash combat and recreations of major battles from Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy.
Return of the King was particularly memorable thanks to its expanded roster of playable characters and co-op gameplay.
Other possibilities could include games such as The Third Age, which took the franchise in an RPG direction, or even some of the lesser-known Lord of the Rings titles released throughout the 2000s.
However, Aspyr hasn’t named any specific games yet, so fans will have to wait for the next announcement.
