A fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 will no longer be released after its creator received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that the project be cancelled.
Modder Speclizer had been developing the ambitious project since January, with a public release planned for this month. The mod had already attracted attention following the release of a lengthy gameplay showcase in June.

Sony Requests That The Last of Us 2 Multiplayer Mod Not Be Released
Speclizer confirmed the news on social media, explaining that Sony’s intervention means the finished project will never receive its planned public release.
“Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released.”
Speclizer said it was disappointing that the project would never see the light of day but confirmed plans to move on to an original project.
“Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you’ll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own.”
The creator did not provide further details about Sony’s letter or the specific legal reasoning behind the request.
Another The Last of Us Multiplayer Project Disappears
The situation is particularly disappointing for fans because Naughty Dog previously cancelled its own standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game in 2023.
Speclizer’s project attempted to bring multiplayer functionality to The Last of Us Part 2 independently, and around 25 minutes of gameplay had already been shown publicly.
Some fans have suggested that offering access to the mod through Speclizer’s Patreon may have contributed to Sony’s decision, but no official reason has been confirmed.
Whatever prompted Sony’s intervention, Speclizer has confirmed that The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod will not be released, bringing the fan project to an end just before its planned launch.
