Microsoft may have just made one of the strangest branding changes in recent gaming memory… because Xbox is suddenly becoming XBOX.
Yes, seriously.
Over the past few days, fans started noticing that Microsoft’s gaming division has quietly begun switching from the traditional “Xbox” branding to the fully capitalized XBOX across official social media channels and marketing material.
And somehow, the internet instantly turned it into a debate.
It Apparently Started With a Social Media Poll
The whole thing began after Xbox executive Asha Sharma posted a poll on X asking fans a very simple question:
Xbox or XBOX?
More than 12,000 people voted, with XBOX ultimately winning the poll. Shortly afterward, Microsoft’s official branding on several social platforms started shifting toward the all-caps version.
Honestly, this feels like the most Microsoft thing imaginable.

Technically… XBOX Was Always the “Correct” Version
As funny as the whole situation sounds, there actually is some logic behind the change.
If you look back at original console packaging, hardware branding, and older promotional material, Microsoft has often used the fully capitalized XBOX logo style on consoles themselves.
So in a way, this could simply be Microsoft trying to unify the branding across all products and platforms moving forward.
Sony solved this years ago with the consistent PlayStation branding, while Microsoft has spent two decades giving us names like:
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- Xbox One X
- Xbox Series X
- Xbox Series S
…so maybe simplifying things really was overdue.
Fans Are Already Joking About Future Console Names
Of course, the internet immediately started making fun of what this could mean for future Xbox hardware.
Because if Microsoft already struggles with naming conventions, people are now terrified we’re heading toward something like:
- XBOX Windows Gaming Device
- XBOX Series XX
- XBOX Cloud Console
- XBOX Portable X
And honestly? None of those even sound impossible anymore.
New Xbox Boot-Up Sound Officially Arrives Next Week
Xbox or XBOX?
For now, the rebrand appears to mostly affect social channels and marketing presentation rather than official product naming.
Still, it’s another reminder that Microsoft clearly wants to reshape the identity of its gaming business moving into the next generation.
Whether fans actually start typing XBOX instead of Xbox though…
…that’s probably a completely different battle.
