Rumors surrounding the PlayStation 6 have been accelerating in recent months, with some reports suggesting Sony could delay the next-generation console until 2028 or even 2029 due to rising hardware costs and ongoing memory shortages.
However, one of the industry’s most frequently cited hardware insiders believes those concerns may be overblown.
According to recent comments from well-known leaker KeplerL2, the PS6 remains on track and is not expected to slip into the latter part of the decade.
Insider Pushes Back Against Delay Claims
Discussion surrounding a potential PlayStation 6 delay recently surfaced on NeoGAF, where several users debated whether increasing manufacturing costs could force Sony to postpone the console’s launch.
KeplerL2, who has previously shared accurate information regarding PlayStation hardware and AMD technology, responded to the discussion in a rather simple way.
Rather than posting a detailed explanation, the insider replied with a familiar GIF of Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia shaking his head.
The message was clear: Kepler does not believe the PlayStation 6 has been delayed.
While that doesn’t officially confirm a 2027 release window, it does directly challenge reports suggesting Sony may push the console back to 2028 or 2029.
Why A Delay Might Not Make Sense
The discussion also highlighted several practical reasons why Sony may be unlikely to significantly postpone the system.
One NeoGAF user argued that delaying a console that is reportedly already deep into development would create more problems than it solves.
The post suggested Sony has likely already secured manufacturing agreements with TSMC for processor production and may also have contracts in place for GDDR7 memory, making a large-scale delay both expensive and difficult to justify.
The user also pointed out that PlayStation 5 sales are naturally beginning to slow as the generation matures, creating a strong incentive for Sony to begin transitioning toward its next platform.
KeplerL2 appeared to endorse that line of thinking by liking the post, further reinforcing speculation that the insider believes Sony’s plans remain largely unchanged.
Could PS6 Really Launch Next Year?
While Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6, several reports over the last year have pointed toward a late 2027 release window.
That timeline would line up with previous PlayStation generations.
The original PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, meaning a 2027 release would place roughly seven years between console generations—a pattern Sony has followed before.
If accurate, players could potentially see the first official PS6 reveal sometime within the next 12 to 18 months.
Naturally, all current information remains unofficial, and Sony has yet to comment publicly on any next-generation hardware plans.
Rising Costs Remain A Concern
One factor fueling delay speculation has been the increasing cost of memory and semiconductor components.
Recent hardware launches, including the newly announced Steam Machine, have highlighted how dramatically component pricing has changed in recent years.
Some analysts believe those rising costs could affect future console pricing, potentially resulting in more expensive hardware than previous generations.
However, supporters of a 2027 launch argue that waiting longer doesn’t necessarily guarantee cheaper production costs.
Memory prices could remain elevated, while delaying the launch would also mean sacrificing several years of potential sales and market share.
For Now, It’s All About PS5
Until Sony officially unveils its next console, the PlayStation 5 still has plenty of life left.
Major upcoming releases such as Marvel’s Wolverine, Saros, and several unannounced first-party projects are expected to keep the platform active for years to come.
Still, with hardware rumors becoming more frequent and insiders continuing to discuss Sony’s future plans, it feels increasingly likely that conversations about the PlayStation 6 are only just beginning.
