Dave Bautista is reportedly in talks to play Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming God of War television adaptation, potentially replacing Ryan Hurst following the actor’s recent on-set injury.
The former WWE Superstar and Guardians of the Galaxy actor has not yet officially signed on for the role, but negotiations are reportedly underway as Amazon looks to resume production without significantly delaying the highly anticipated series.
Dave Bautista Is in Talks to Become Kratos
According to a report from Variety, Bautista is currently being considered to take over the role of the Ghost of Sparta.
The casting situation changed after Ryan Hurst, who had originally been selected to portray Kratos, suffered a serious injury during production. Hurst reportedly tore his bicep, leaving him facing a lengthy recovery period that could have prevented him from returning to filming until early 2027.
Rather than delaying the entire production, the decision was made to search for another actor.
The current goal is reportedly to have the God of War series back in production before the end of 2026.
Bautista Seems Like a Natural Fit for Kratos
Bautista would certainly bring plenty of physical presence to the role.
Before establishing himself as a Hollywood actor, he became one of WWE’s biggest stars, winning multiple world championships during his professional wrestling career.
He later successfully transitioned into acting, becoming best known as Drax the Destroyer throughout Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the wider MCU.
His other notable roles include Mr. Hinx in Spectre, as well as appearances in major productions such as Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Knock at the Cabin.
Although Bautista has significantly slimmed down compared to his wrestling days, his experience with physically demanding roles could make him an interesting choice for the older version of Kratos depicted in the Norse God of War games.

Amazon appears to have significant confidence in the adaptation, with the God of War series already greenlit for two seasons.
Several major characters have also reportedly been cast.
The current lineup includes:
- Ólafur Ólafsson as Thor
- Mandy Patinkin as Odin
- Callum Vinson as Atreus
Variety reports that Vinson remains attached to the role of Kratos’ son despite previous reports suggesting that Amazon was considering additional recasting ahead of production.
The Series Will Adapt God of War 2018
Prime Video’s adaptation is expected to begin with the story of God of War (2018) rather than revisiting Kratos’ original Greek saga.
That means audiences will meet an older and more restrained Kratos living in the Norse realms alongside his son, Atreus.
Following the death of his wife, Faye, the pair embark on a journey to fulfill her final wish by scattering her ashes from the highest peak in all the realms.
Their journey ultimately brings them into conflict with the Norse gods and sets up the events that eventually lead into God of War Ragnarök.
Bautista Hasn’t Officially Been Cast Yet
For now, it’s important to emphasize that Dave Bautista has not officially been confirmed as Kratos.
He is reportedly in negotiations for the role, meaning a deal could still fall through before Amazon makes a formal casting announcement.
However, if an agreement is reached, Bautista would become the new face of Kratos in one of Prime Video’s biggest upcoming video game adaptations—and potentially remain in the role for at least two seasons.
