The Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes remain in active development at Remedy Entertainment, with the studio providing a small but reassuring update on the highly anticipated projects.
Fans have been waiting for more information about the return of Remedy’s iconic action franchise, but details have remained extremely limited. According to Remedy, there’s a straightforward reason for the silence: Rockstar Games is handling publishing and controls communication surrounding the project.
The important news, however, is that development continues.
Max Payne 1 & 2 Remakes Are Still in Production
The latest update comes from Remedy Entertainment’s 2026 half-year financial report, which included questions surrounding several of the studio’s upcoming projects.
Naturally, Max Payne was among the subjects fans wanted to hear more about.
Remedy confirmed that production on the Max Payne 1 & 2 remake project is still underway, but the studio isn’t currently in a position to reveal additional information.
When asked about the games, a Remedy representative explained:
“There’s a lot of questions concerning Max Payne; on that game, Rockstar Games is handling the publishing side, so we can’t comment on those questions.”
That means future announcements surrounding the remakes will likely come through Rockstar rather than Remedy itself.
Rockstar Games Is Publishing the Max Payne Remakes
Remedy created the original Max Payne and Max Payne 2 before Rockstar Games took over development duties for Max Payne 3, which launched in 2012.
The two companies are now working together to bring the original games back for modern platforms.
Remedy is handling development of the remakes, while Rockstar Games is financing and publishing the project.
Previous updates have also indicated that Rockstar has been working closely with Remedy during development.
The partnership makes sense considering the history both companies share with the franchise, but Rockstar’s publishing role also explains why Remedy has been unable to freely discuss development progress.

Rather than developing and releasing two completely separate games, Remedy is rebuilding Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne as a single project.
The remakes are being developed using Remedy’s Northlight engine, the same technology behind games such as Control and Alan Wake 2.
That potentially gives Remedy an opportunity to dramatically modernize the visuals, environments, animation, combat, and signature Bullet Time mechanics while maintaining the dark atmosphere and neo-noir storytelling that defined the originals.
Exactly how extensively Remedy plans to alter the games remains unknown.
Rockstar’s Focus Is Currently on GTA 6
One obvious factor surrounding the lack of Max Payne news is Rockstar’s enormous focus on Grand Theft Auto 6.
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, and Rockstar is currently ramping up the game’s marketing campaign ahead of release.
With GTA 6 representing arguably the biggest launch in the company’s history, it’s understandable that Rockstar isn’t rushing to begin another major promotional campaign at the same time.
That doesn’t necessarily mean development of Max Payne has slowed, however.
Remedy’s latest update specifically confirms that work on the project continues behind the scenes.
Max Payne Is Still Coming Back
There still isn’t a release date, new trailer, gameplay demonstration, or substantial development update for the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes.
But for fans concerned by the lengthy silence, Remedy’s latest financial report provides the most important confirmation: the project is still happening.
Remedy continues to develop the remakes while Rockstar handles publishing and decides when new information can be shared publicly.
After more than a decade without a new Max Payne release, the wait continues—but Max Payne 1 and 2 are still officially on their way back.
