Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst after the actor suffered an injury during production.
The live-action adaptation of one of PlayStation’s biggest franchises has undergone a significant change after filming had already begun. Hurst was originally set to portray Kratos but suffered a torn bicep on set, requiring enough recovery time that production could not continue as originally planned.
Rather than waiting for Hurst to recover, the role has now been recast, with former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista stepping in as the new Kratos.

According to Variety, Bautista has officially joined the God of War series, with production expected to resume within the coming weeks.
The change won’t be quite as simple as continuing from where filming stopped.
Because Hurst had already filmed scenes as Kratos before suffering his injury, all previously completed scenes featuring him will reportedly need to be reshot with Bautista.
Bautista has built an extensive acting career since transitioning away from professional wrestling, with his best-known role being Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
His other major appearances include Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Army of the Dead, Knock at the Cabin, and Spectre, giving Amazon an experienced action star for one of the most important roles in the adaptation.

God of War Series Will Cover the Norse Saga
Filming on God of War began in Vancouver, British Columbia, in February 2026, before Hurst’s injury interrupted production.
Prime Video is also making a substantial commitment to the adaptation.
Amazon has already greenlit God of War Season 2, with the first two seasons expected to be filmed back-to-back.
The series is expected to adapt the story of the two most recent mainline games, God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, following Kratos’ journey through the Norse realms alongside his son Atreus.
Despite the change involving Kratos, Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus. Previous reports suggested the role could potentially be recast as well, but that has not happened.
The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, alongside several other characters from the Norse era of the franchise.
Bautista now faces the enormous task of bringing one of PlayStation’s most recognizable characters to live action.
Kratos has undergone a dramatic transformation throughout the God of War series, evolving from the rage-driven Spartan warrior of the original Greek saga into the older and more restrained father seen in the Norse games.
With production expected to resume soon, the biggest question now is how Bautista’s interpretation of Kratos will compare with the character fans know from the games.
