Rockstar Games has clarified an important detail ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI’s launch: PlayStation 5 download codes are region locked, while Xbox download codes can be redeemed in any region.

The announcement comes shortly after fans voiced disappointment over the physical edition of GTA 6, which contains a download code instead of a game disc. Now, PlayStation players have another restriction to keep in mind before purchasing the game.

PS5 Codes Must Match Your PlayStation Account Region

According to Rockstar Support, GTA 6 download codes for PlayStation 5 can only be redeemed on PlayStation accounts registered in the same supported region.

In other words, if you purchase a PS5 code from one region but your PlayStation Network account belongs to another, the code may not activate.

Rockstar recommends purchasing the game from a retailer located in the same country or region as your PlayStation account to avoid activation issues.

Xbox Codes Have No Regional Restrictions

Unlike the PlayStation version, Xbox download codes for GTA 6 are not region locked.

Players can redeem Xbox codes regardless of the country or region in which they were purchased, making the process significantly more flexible for international buyers and those importing physical editions.

Rockstar also published the supported redemption regions for PlayStation codes.

Some of the major regions include:

• Brazil – Brazil only
• North America – United States and Canada
• United Kingdom – United Kingdom only
• Japan – Japan only
• South Korea – South Korea only
• Saudi Arabia & UAE – Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates
• Latin America – Including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and several other countries
• Europe, Australia, and Other Territories – Including Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Turkey, and many more supported countries

Players should ensure their PlayStation account belongs to the same regional group as the code they purchase.

Japan Has an Expiration Date

Rockstar also noted a special restriction for Japanese players.

Due to local regulations, GTA 6 download codes issued in Japan will expire 170 days after their issuance, meaning owners must redeem their code before the expiration period ends.

Important for Import Buyers

The regional restrictions are especially important for players planning to import collector’s editions or purchase the game from overseas retailers.

If you’re buying GTA 6 for PlayStation 5, always verify that the code matches the region of your PlayStation Network account before completing your purchase.

Xbox users, meanwhile, won’t have to worry about regional compatibility, as Rockstar has confirmed that all Xbox download codes are region-free.
