GSC Game World has officially announced that STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl will receive its first major story expansion, Cost of Hope, on August 20 across all platforms.
The announcement arrived alongside a brand-new trailer, confirming that players will soon return to The Zone for a brand-new adventure featuring unexplored locations, new characters, additional weapons, and dozens of hours of fresh content.
Launching alongside the expansion is the highly anticipated 2.0 Update, a free overhaul that introduces major technical upgrades and gameplay improvements for every existing owner of STALKER 2.

Cost of Hope Expands the Story
The expansion once again places players in the role of Skif, the protagonist of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
A mysterious PDA signal draws Skif into events unfolding alongside the main campaign, leading players into completely new areas of The Zone that have never appeared throughout the franchise’s history.
According to GSC Game World, the expansion includes:
- A brand-new story campaign.
- Previously unseen locations across The Zone.
- New allies and dangerous enemies.
- Additional weapons and equipment.
- Dozens of hours of new gameplay.
- Meaningful player choices that influence the future of The Zone.
Rather than acting as a simple side mission, Cost of Hope expands the world with an entirely new chapter that runs parallel to the events of the base game.
Free 2.0 Update Launches the Same Day
Alongside the premium expansion, every owner of STALKER 2 will receive the 2.0 Update free of charge.
The update brings one of the game’s biggest technical upgrades since launch, including a move to a new version of Unreal Engine 5.
GSC Game World has also confirmed that the update introduces a wide range of gameplay improvements and new content designed to enhance the overall experience.
While the studio hasn’t revealed every feature yet, players can expect additional quality-of-life improvements, technical optimizations, and further refinements across the game.
Premium Expansion, Free Update
It’s important to note that the two releases are separate.
The 2.0 Update will be completely free for everyone who already owns STALKER 2.
Meanwhile, Cost of Hope will be sold as a paid expansion, adding a substantial amount of new story content beyond the base game.
