GTA 6 Reportedly Won’t Have First-Person Mode at Launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 reportedly won’t feature a first-person mode when it launches on November 19, with Rockstar Games seemingly returning to a third-person-only experience for Jason and Lucia’s journey through Vice City.

Following Rockstar’s huge GTA 6 Extended Look on August 27, several creators invited to Rockstar North have begun sharing additional details they learned about the most anticipated game of the year.

One of the more surprising claims concerns the game’s camera perspective.

According to Brazilian creator Davy Jones, who was among those invited to preview GTA 6 at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, there will be no first-person perspective available at launch.

It’s a notable omission considering GTA 5 eventually allowed players to experience virtually the entire game from a first-person perspective.

GTA 6 Reportedly Launches Without First-Person Mode

Davy Jones reportedly revealed that GTA 6 doesn’t currently include a first-person perspective, meaning players will experience Jason and Lucia’s story through Rockstar’s traditional third-person camera.

There is, however, some uncertainty surrounding exactly how definitive that information is.

It’s unclear whether Rockstar explicitly confirmed to Jones that first-person mode won’t be available, or whether the conclusion comes from the feature simply not appearing during the preview.

For that reason, the absence of first-person mode should be treated as a report rather than an official Rockstar announcement for now.

Still, considering the access creators received to the game and its developers, the claim is certainly worth paying attention to.

GTA 5 Didn’t Originally Have First-Person Mode Either

There’s also an important precedent here.

When Grand Theft Auto 5 originally launched in 2013, it was designed around the traditional third-person perspective associated with the series.

A more substantial first-person experience arrived later alongside GTA 5’s move to newer hardware, allowing players to experience Los Santos from an entirely different perspective.

Rockstar continued improving the feature over time, eventually making first-person gameplay a much more complete part of GTA 5.

That history means GTA 6 launching without the feature doesn’t necessarily mean it will remain third-person-only forever.

Rockstar could theoretically introduce first-person support through a future update or later version of the game, much like it did with GTA 5.

For now, though, that’s purely speculation.

First-Person GTA 6 Could Be a Very Different Experience

While first-person was never essential to GTA 5, it offered an entirely different way of experiencing Rockstar’s world.

Driving through Los Santos, exploring interiors and participating in shootouts from behind the eyes of Michael, Franklin or Trevor could make familiar situations feel surprisingly different.

The potential is arguably even greater with GTA 6.

Rockstar has dramatically increased the level of detail throughout Vice City, while recently revealed gameplay has shown more sophisticated NPC behavior, denser streets, realistic traffic and a deeper law enforcement system.

Seeing all of that from Jason or Lucia’s perspective could make GTA 6 considerably more immersive.

At the same time, GTA has traditionally been designed as a third-person franchise, and focusing entirely on that perspective could allow Rockstar to polish movement, animation and combat around one primary camera system.

Rockstar Could Always Add It Later

Nothing currently suggests that Rockstar is permanently abandoning first-person gameplay.

If the latest report is accurate, all we know is that GTA 6 isn’t expected to offer the option when the game initially launches.

Given GTA 5’s history, a future first-person update certainly wouldn’t be unprecedented.

But until Rockstar discusses the feature directly, players shouldn’t assume that such an update is guaranteed.

After the massive August 27 gameplay reveal and subsequent creator previews, we’re learning more about GTA 6 than ever before – and apparently, some of those details involve features that won’t make the initial release.

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Would you actually play GTA 6 entirely in first-person if Rockstar added the option later, or is Grand Theft Auto simply better in third-person? Let us know in the comments below.
