Players hoping to return to the dark fantasy world of Lords of the Fallen 2 later this year will need to wait a little longer.
Following its recent appearance at Summer Game Fest 2026, where CI Games confirmed platform details and a Fall 2026 release window, the publisher has now announced that the highly anticipated sequel has officially been delayed.
The new release target is now Q1 2027.
CI Games Wants More Time for Polish and Improvements
The announcement came directly from CI Games leadership via social media, where the company explained that additional development time will allow the team to further refine the overall experience before launch.
According to the statement, developers have been working closely with an internal Gameplay Feedback Team, a group made up of experienced Soulslike players who have been testing the game throughout development.
Their feedback reportedly identified several opportunities to improve combat systems, gameplay flow, balancing, and overall quality.
As a result, the studio decided that additional development time would ultimately benefit the final product.
“These enhancements will benefit from additional integration, iteration, and polishing time, enabling the team to deliver the highest possible quality at launch.”
For a genre as demanding as Soulslikes, where combat responsiveness, encounter design, and balance are heavily scrutinized by players, the decision is likely aimed at avoiding the technical issues and rough edges that have affected several recent releases across the industry.
Avoiding GTA 6 and a Crowded Fall Release Window
While quality improvements are the official reason for the delay, the timing is difficult to ignore.
The Fall 2026 release schedule is becoming increasingly crowded as publishers attempt to navigate around the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.
Several major publishers have already adjusted release dates to avoid competing directly with Rockstar’s upcoming blockbuster, which is expected to dominate both sales and player attention for months.
Moving Lords of the Fallen 2 into early 2027 gives CI Games a much cleaner release window while also providing additional development time.
From a business perspective, it may prove to be a smart decision.
A Worthy Successor Is the Goal
CI Games emphasized that the team remains fully committed to delivering a stronger sequel that builds upon the foundations of the 2023 reboot.
The company stated that developers remain energized by the positive reception to recent trailers and gameplay reveals and are focused on creating what it describes as a “worthy successor” to the franchise.
“The team remains fully energized by the strong response to our recent reveals and is deeply focused on delivering a standout dark fantasy action RPG.”
The first Lords of the Fallen reboot helped re-establish the series among Soulslike fans thanks to its dual-world mechanics, challenging combat encounters, and dark fantasy setting. Expectations for the sequel are significantly higher, especially with the genre continuing to grow in popularity following the success of titles like Elden Ring.
When Can Players Expect More News?
Although the game has been pushed back to Q1 2027, CI Games confirmed that additional updates will be shared in the coming months.
With development continuing throughout the remainder of 2026, players can likely expect more gameplay showcases, feature breakdowns, and perhaps even a new release date announcement before the end of the year.
For now, the wait has become a little longer—but if the extra time results in a smoother and more polished experience, many fans will likely consider it time well spent.
