Sony has shared new insight into its long-term vision for the Next PlayStation, explaining that the company’s goal isn’t simply to compete with gaming PCs, but to create an experience that remains uniquely PlayStation.
The comments came during a translated Q&A session from Sony’s June corporate meeting, where executives discussed the changing gaming landscape following the COVID-19 pandemic and how PlayStation plans to evolve in the years ahead.
Sony Wants to Expand Beyond the Living Room
In the meeting, executives from Sony Interactive Entertainment, such as CEO and President Hideaki Nishino, Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst, and Senior Vice President of Finance and Corporate Development Lynn Azar, were questioned about PlayStation’s strategy to regain players who shifted to PC gaming during the pandemic.
The executives also addressed questions about future hardware, profitability, and what differentiates PlayStation from an increasingly competitive PC market.
According to Sony, the company no longer wants PlayStation to be viewed solely as a console designed for the living room.

A Broader PlayStation Ecosystem
Sony explained that gaming habits have changed considerably over the past several years, with many players now using desktop monitors and alternative gaming setups instead of traditional televisions.
To adapt, the company has expanded its lineup of PlayStation accessories, including products such as:
- Gaming monitors
- PULSE audio devices and speakers
- PlayStation Portal
- Other peripherals designed for more flexible ways to play
The goal is to make PlayStation fit naturally into a wider variety of gaming environments rather than being tied to a single room in the home.
The Next PlayStation Will Offer Something PCs Can’t
Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from Sony’s comments concerns its next-generation hardware strategy.
Rather than building a console that simply matches gaming PCs in raw performance, Sony says it wants the next PlayStation platform to deliver experiences that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere.
The company stated:
“For the next-generation platform, rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs, we aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation.”
According to Sony, that vision extends beyond hardware specifications and includes expanding the ways players interact with the PlayStation ecosystem.

A Seamless Experience Across More Devices
Sony also emphasized that the future of PlayStation is about flexibility.
The company wants players to enjoy a seamless gaming experience that extends beyond the traditional console setup, allowing PlayStation to become part of everyday gaming regardless of where users choose to play.
As Sony explained:
“PlayStation has long been strongly associated with the idea of playing in the living room. However, in recent years, more users globally have been using personal monitors. In response, we are selling peripherals such as monitors and speakers to broaden usage scenarios.”
While Sony stopped short of revealing specific details about the PlayStation 6, the company’s comments suggest the next generation will focus not only on more powerful hardware, but also on creating a connected ecosystem that differentiates PlayStation from the increasingly capable PC gaming market.
