A new report suggests Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console, currently known by the codename Project Helix, could launch without a built-in disc drive.
The claim arrives just hours after Sony officially announced it will end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, leading many to believe the gaming industry is rapidly moving toward a fully digital future.
Sony Confirms End of Physical PlayStation Game Discs Starting in 2028
Project Helix May Be Digital-Only
According to a report from Windows Central, sources claim Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware is also expected to abandon physical media.
The report states:
“Our sources also suggest that Microsoft’s next-generation console will drop the disc drive, too.”
If accurate, Project Helix would become Microsoft’s first flagship Xbox console to launch without native support for physical game discs.
At the time of writing, Microsoft has not officially confirmed the report.

No Word on an External Disc Drive
While the report suggests Project Helix won’t include an internal disc drive, it’s currently unknown whether Microsoft plans to offer an optional external drive.
Sony currently sells a detachable disc drive for certain PlayStation 5 models, and many industry analysts believe a similar approach could become standard for future consoles.
However, neither Microsoft nor Sony has confirmed whether their next-generation systems will support external optical drives.
Xbox and PlayStation Moving Toward a Digital Future
The report follows Sony’s announcement that all new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be distributed digitally, ending physical disc production for future titles.
If Microsoft’s next Xbox also launches as a digital-first platform, it would mark a major turning point for the console industry after decades of physical media.
Recent reports have also suggested:
- Xbox developer kits could arrive in 2027
- Sony is preparing the PlayStation 6 for a similar timeframe
- Rising memory and SSD costs may significantly increase console prices
Next-Generation Details Remain Unconfirmed
Microsoft has previously confirmed that early versions of its next-generation hardware are expected to reach developers before launch, but many key questions remain unanswered.
Among the biggest unknowns are:
- Final hardware specifications
- Pricing
- Release date
- Backward compatibility
- Physical media support
Until Microsoft officially unveils Project Helix, reports regarding the absence of a disc drive should be treated as rumors rather than confirmed plans.
Still, with Sony already committing to a digital-first future, the possibility of both next-generation consoles abandoning physical media appears increasingly realistic.
