CD Projekt RED has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, marking an incredible milestone for one of the most remarkable redemption stories in gaming history.
The developer shared the achievement on social media, thanking players while stating that Cyberpunk 2077 has created a strong foundation for the future of the franchise, including the sequel currently in development.
From One of Gaming’s Most Controversial Launches…
When Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, it was anything but the futuristic RPG players had been promised.
Despite years of anticipation, the game arrived plagued by technical issues, especially on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Performance problems, crashes, bugs, missing features, and broken systems quickly turned the release into one of the most criticized launches in gaming history.
The backlash was so severe that Sony temporarily removed the game from the PlayStation Store, refunds were issued across multiple platforms, and CD Projekt RED faced lawsuits from investors over the game’s troubled release.
At the time, many questioned whether the studio could ever recover.

…To One of the Best RPGs of the Generation
Instead of abandoning the project, CD Projekt RED spent years rebuilding Cyberpunk 2077.
Dozens of major updates dramatically improved performance, overhauled gameplay systems, expanded police AI, redesigned progression, refined combat, and transformed many of the game’s core mechanics.
The massive Update 2.0 represented the biggest turning point, effectively modernizing the experience into something much closer to the original vision.
Today, Cyberpunk 2077 is widely regarded as one of the strongest open-world RPGs available, with Night City becoming one of gaming’s most immersive and visually impressive settings.
Phantom Liberty Elevated the Game Even Further
The release of Phantom Liberty in 2023 cemented Cyberpunk 2077’s comeback.
Featuring a new district, expanded gameplay systems, memorable characters, and a gripping spy-thriller storyline, the expansion received widespread critical acclaim and is regularly ranked among the greatest DLC expansions ever released.
Its emotional narrative, stellar performances—including Idris Elba’s role as Solomon Reed—and multiple endings further strengthened Cyberpunk’s reputation.

A Franchise With a Bright Future
Cyberpunk has evolved far beyond a single game.
The universe expanded with the critically acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, while CD Projekt RED is actively developing the next major Cyberpunk title using Unreal Engine 5.
Reaching 40 million copies sold demonstrates just how dramatically public perception has changed over the last six years.
Very few games have managed to recover from such a disastrous launch and eventually become industry success stories. Cyberpunk 2077 now stands as one of gaming’s greatest examples of long-term post-launch support, proving that sustained development, community feedback, and developer commitment can completely reshape a game’s legacy.
