PlayStation Confirms Existing Physical Games Can Still Be Reprinted After 2028

Sony has clarified an important detail following its announcement that new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs beginning in January 2028.

While the decision marks the end of disc production for future releases, publishers will still be able to manufacture additional copies of games released before the cutoff date, ensuring that existing physical titles remain available after 2028.

Existing PlayStation Games Will Continue Receiving Disc Reprints

According to a new report from Game File, Sony has informed publishing partners that games released before the January 2028 deadline will continue to qualify for physical disc reprints.

In its communication to partners, Sony reportedly confirmed that publishers will:

  • Continue to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.
  • Be able to manufacture additional physical copies after 2028.
  • Receive further details about an updated disc ordering process at a later date.

The company noted that while disc production will continue for eligible titles, the process used to order and manufacture those discs will change.

Sony says more information about the revised system will be shared with partners in the future.

What Happens to Games Released After January 2028?

For titles launching after the January 2028 deadline, Sony’s strategy remains unchanged.

New PlayStation games will be distributed digitally, including at physical retailers through boxed editions containing download codes rather than Blu-ray discs.

While Sony has confirmed that publishers will still be able to sell new releases at retail, it has not yet explained exactly what those products will look like.

It’s currently unclear whether future boxed releases will include:

  • Printed download vouchers
  • Digital activation cards
  • Other forms of redeemable digital licenses

Sony is expected to provide more details closer to the transition.

Good News for Physical Collectors

The clarification offers some reassurance for collectors and players who still prefer physical media.

Even after Sony ends disc production for new PlayStation releases, games launched before January 2028—including titles released throughout 2027—will still be eligible for future physical print runs.

That means players who miss a launch window shouldn’t necessarily have to rely on the second-hand market, as publishers will retain the option to produce additional copies of existing disc-based games.

While PlayStation’s long-term future is clearly moving toward digital distribution, physical editions of today’s games aren’t disappearing overnight.
