Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has reassured fans that the upcoming game will deliver a complete conclusion to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with no DLC required to see the true ending.
The third and final installment is scheduled for 2027, and while Square Enix hasn’t ruled out releasing additional content afterward, Hamaguchi says the development team is committed to finishing the entire main story within Revelation itself.
At the same time, the director continues to keep fans guessing about exactly what that ending will look like.
The Full Ending Will Be in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Speaking in a recent interview with Automaton, Hamaguchi addressed concerns that Revelation could leave part of its conclusion for a future expansion.
That’s not happening.
Hamaguchi confirmed that the story will be completely concluded within the main game, emphasizing that the team is serious about bringing the Remake trilogy to an end with Revelation.
That’s particularly important considering how dramatically Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have expanded and altered elements of the original 1997 story.
Players won’t need to purchase an additional expansion to discover how Cloud and his companions’ journey ultimately ends.
DLC Could Still Happen
That doesn’t mean Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will never receive DLC.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that fans will naturally want more content after completing the trilogy, but explained that no definitive DLC plans have been established yet.
If Square Enix does decide to produce an expansion, Hamaguchi would prefer something closer to Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Episode INTERmission.
Rather than extending the main ending, a potential DLC could focus on an individual character and explore events or stories that weren’t shown during the main trilogy.
That approach would allow Square Enix to expand the universe without making additional content essential to understanding Revelation’s conclusion.
The Ending Could Be Completely Different From the Original
Hamaguchi also addressed perhaps the biggest question surrounding Revelation: Will it end the same way as the original Final Fantasy 7?
For now, he’s refusing to give anything away.
The director explained that the ending could remain completely faithful to the original game, move in an entirely different direction, or potentially deliver something players haven’t considered at all.
Rather than focusing solely on whether individual events remain unchanged, Hamaguchi wants players to finish Revelation feeling satisfied that they experienced the entire Remake project from beginning to end.

Another major question involves Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, the 2005 movie set after the events of the original game.
Hamaguchi wouldn’t rule out Revelation connecting directly with Advent Children, but explained that Square Enix’s ambitions are broader than simply creating a path toward the movie.
The Remake trilogy is being designed as an overarching Final Fantasy 7 universe incorporating lore and ideas from numerous existing projects.
That includes:

- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
- Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7
- Other stories and characters from the wider Final Fantasy 7 universe
This means elements of Advent Children could influence Revelation’s conclusion without necessarily forcing the new trilogy to follow exactly the same path as the original timeline.
Square Enix Wants Revelation to Be the Definitive Finale
Hamaguchi has previously indicated that he plans to move on after completing the trilogy, making Revelation the culmination of a project that began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
After Remake and Rebirth repeatedly challenged players’ expectations about which parts of the original story could be changed, the final game’s ending remains one of Revelation’s biggest mysteries.
What Square Enix is willing to confirm is arguably just as important: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will contain the complete ending of the trilogy at launch.
Any DLC that potentially follows would expand the world and its characters rather than lock the real conclusion behind additional paid content.
