Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 FPS with ray tracing on the standard PlayStation 5, with Insomniac Games confirming that high-performance gameplay has been a priority since early in development.
Unlike previous Insomniac releases, where players typically choose between fidelity and performance modes, Wolverine has been designed around a 60 FPS ray-traced experience from the beginning. Better yet, this will be the game’s default graphics mode, even for players using the base PS5.

Wolverine Targets 60 FPS and Ray Tracing From the Start
Speaking to IGN, Insomniac Games Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald explained that the studio’s experience with previous PlayStation 5 games gave the team enough confidence to make 60 FPS with ray tracing a fundamental part of Wolverine’s development.
Previous Insomniac titles have generally launched with separate fidelity and performance options before the studio introduced additional modes combining higher frame rates with ray-traced effects.
With Marvel’s Wolverine, the developer decided to approach things differently.
“We know we’re confident we can ship this now. This is going to be a 60 frames per second game with ray tracing.”
Fitzgerald explained that Insomniac has been building the entire game around that target rather than treating a ray-traced performance mode as something to optimize toward late in development.
It also marks the first time one of the studio’s games will use this type of performance-focused option as its default mode.

Wolverine’s Environments Will Reflect Logan’s Destruction
Performance isn’t the only technical area Insomniac is pushing with Wolverine.
The studio also wants environments to properly react to Logan’s brutal fighting style, with Fitzgerald explaining that it wouldn’t make sense for players to finish a massive battle only to find the surrounding environment looking untouched.
“Logan’s a really destructive character.”
Insomniac therefore wants the aftermath of combat encounters to visually reflect the chaos players just caused, with destructible environments helping sell the power and brutality of Wolverine.
That philosophy fits with everything shown from the game so far. Marvel’s Wolverine is considerably more violent than Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, with its recent Mature 17+ ESRB rating confirming blood and gore, dismemberment, decapitation, and intense violence.
With 60 FPS gameplay, ray tracing, destructible environments, and Insomniac leaning heavily into Logan’s violent fighting style, Wolverine is shaping up to be one of the studio’s most technically ambitious releases yet.
Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
